Lyceum scores a win against FEU

MANILA, Philippines—Lyceum of the Philippines finally ended its three-game skid with a thrilling five-set victory over reigning UAAP champion Far Eastern University Sunday that revived its hopes in the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 of the women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Veteran Beverly Boto scored 23 points, including 20 kills, while Dahlia Cruz added 16 for the Lady Pirates, who took the last two sets to complete a tough 25-23, 20-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-8 win over the Lady Tams before a big Sunday crowd.
Adamson University served notice of its title bid as it walloped Ateneo de Manila University, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18, in the second game to catch idle San Sebastian College at the helm with its second win in as many outings.
Neriza Bautista outhit, outplayed and outscored Thai import Jindarat Kanchana, finishing with 14 kills in a 15-point output while Angela Benting and Rissa Laguilles fired 14 and 12 points, respectively for the Lady Falcons, the losing UAAP finalists.
The power-spiking Kanchana, who normed 17 hits in Ateneo’s first two romps, was held to 10 points while the prolific Ma. Rosario Soriano struggled for only nine points as the Eagles dropped to third with a 2-1 slate.
Lyceum’s first win in four starts revived the Lady Pirates’ hopes for a quarterfinal berth in the double-round elimination phase of the event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.
FEU, which outlasted College of St. Benilde also in five sets last week, dropped to 1-1.
Boto also had three blocks while Sylvie Gay Artates came up with two to anchor Lyceum’s defense up front while the rest of the crew helped neutralize the spiker Irish Morada.
Cruz also blasted home 13 points for the Lady Pirates, who started out strong but failed to thwart the Lady Tams in the second and third sets.
“I told my players in the fifth set that they should play as a team and help each other,” said Lyceum assistant coach Benjamin Mape, who took over from head coach Emil Lontoc.
The Pirates pounced on three errors by the Lady Tams, including two by Morada, before Boto delivered a kill that gave Lyceum a 13-7 lead in the deciding frame.

New Student Council presidents bared

After days of campaigns and preparations for this year's student council election, all colleges have now produced new set of student leaders for this school year. The election gathered thousands of votes from more than 9,000 Lyceans who trooped to Mabini Hall last July 10-11 and cast their favorites. Tight competition is how to describe the battle between 2 dominating parties, the Kalayaan and Independiente Party. In the end, the latter one produced the most elected officers.

Here is the list of new student council presidents of each colleges:

Welcome to Lyceum Cavite!

The blogger had a wonderful opportunity to tour and take a walk in our university's newest campus, the Lyceum Cavite . Considered as the first resort campus, let's take a look at one of the most beautiful and modern schools of today.
The campus is strategically located in the heart of General Trias, Cavite, about 15-20 kms away from Intramuros , and is accessible by land by bus, jeepney or by taxi. The land area is definitely larger than our Manila campus and there are 2 buildings, separated by a wide area where you can relax and bond with friends in front of 2 mini lakes (with ducks pa!) and wander around and breathe fresh air!! That's one thing we don't have here in Manila. Let's admit it.

One unique feature of this campus is the large backyard at its back, apart from its parking lot, it also has a wide area of green fields where some land animals like ponies, goats and some others wander around and claim it as if its their home. The whole campus currently is about 90% complete, still under completion especially with air-conditioning, and some finishing touches.

We also visited, of course, some classrooms, the library, the canteen, HRM laboratories, Admissions office, and the registrar. Classroom chairs are entirely different than what we have here in Manila, theirs are green-colored fiber glass/chrome chairs. They have whiteboards, but they do not write onto it. It is covered by a transparent board and so it looks so clean. The library, on the other hand, still needs a lot of improvement and more books! They have minimal number of computer stations, and internet wires have yet to be set up. One more thing, most parts of the school, if not the whole, does not rely much on lightings, natural light from outside brings so much light inside the classrooms .

Classes here have started last June, almost one thousand students have enrolled, making them the pioneer batch of the campus.

Lyceum Dance Troupe goes to Macau!

Our own Lyceum Dance Troupe will be participating other dance groups from all other the world in this year's International Youth Dance Festival which will be held in Macau SAR, China from July 4-11, 2008. This is one of their many stints this year and prepares for more dance competitions and events later this year. Bon voyage!

Wanted; Student Marketing Assistant (Part Time)

The Public Relations and Admissions Information Center of our university is now seeking SMAs or Student Marketing Assistants for this semester. Selected SMAs will be joining admissions staff in School-to-School Campaigns, Program Marketing and Public Relations.

• Qualified students are those who are currently enrolled this semester;
  
• at least in their second year;
  
• with no grade lower than 2.75 ;
  
• must have a pleasing personality;
• with excellent communication skills in English and Filipino; and
• with sense of discipline and self-motivation
